Beer & BBQ Battle
of the Bands

For the past three years, Beer & BBQ Festival has worked with Music SA to run a competition where local unsigned bands compete for the chance to open up the main stage on the Saturday night session of BBF. Over that time, we have hosted some of Adelaide’s best new talent including Donnaruma, West Thebarton, Burnside Mums, Mane, The Wanderers, The Montreals and stacks more alongside touring bands such as Regurgitator, Holy Holy, The Preatures, Jen Cloher, Hockey Dad and Ali Barter to name a few.

This year BBF turns 5 and we are turning up the music program and introducing a unique beer band battle!

The way it works

During June we will host 4 heats in 4 breweries, one from each of the hoods (north, east, south and west). The breweries will hand select 4 bands to represent their side of town and the bands will compete, playing 30 minute sets each. On Friday the 12th of July we will open the festival by having our 4 heat winners battle it out to be crowned BBF Beer Band of 2019. They will be judged by the highly scientific “Crowd’o’meter” and the winner will receive a giant novelty cheque for $1000, stacks of beer and a full spot on a subsequent Beer & BBQ presented gig.

DJ Yella

DJ Yella is a DJ, record producer, film director and producer and founding member of the pioneering rap group, N.W.A. N.W.A.’s improbable rise from marginalized outsiders to the most controversial and complicated voices of their generation remains one of rock music’s most explosive, relevant and challenging tales. From their Compton, California headquarters, DJ Yella (Antoine Carraby), along with Eazy E (Eric Wright), Dr. Dre (Andre Young), Ice Cube (O’Shea Jackson) and MC Ren (Lorenzo Patterson), would – be force of will and through unrelenting tales of street life – sell tens of millions of records, influence multiple generations of the world over and extend artistic middle fingers to the societal barriers of geography, respectability, caste, authority and whatever else happened to get in their way.In 2015, DJ Yella was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of N.W.A. That same year, Yella collaborated with N.W.A group members Dr. Dre, Ice Cube and MC Ren to serve as a creative consultant on the critically acclaimed and award-winning biographical film Straight Outta Compton which grossed over 250 million dollars. Currently, DJ Yella continues to tour the world doing live performances, as well as speaking at various Juvenile Halls for troubled teenagers, feeding the homeless at food drives and participating in various other non-profit related festivals and events. DJ Yella’s still keeping it real and coming straight outta Compton straight into the communities all over the globe.

Frenzal Rhomb

Frenzal Rhomb will be bringing the noise to close the main stage on Friday night at BBF19. The seminal punk rock band than formed in 1992 in Sydney, landed its main protagonists on JJJ (Jay & the Doctor), saw them get into a fight with Kyle & Jackie O and made enemies with basically every right-wing censor in the country. Oh yeah, and they are vegan!

The Majesty of Tap

presented by You Am I

When You Am I take the stage on Saturday night at BBF, don’t expect to hear their ARIA award winning 30 year back catalogue of Berlin’s Chair or Heavy Heart. When they take the stage they will not be You Am I, they will be Spinal Tap. Full costume, full character, The Majesty of Tap will flood over Wayville and you.

Melbourne alum Cash Savage & The Last Drinks released Good Citizens last year and (with a reputation for incredible live shows already) now have a critically acclaimed record, written against a backdrop of the divisive marriage equality plebiscite, which is quintessential Australian rock in the vein of Nick Cave and the Dirty Three. If you haven’t seen Cash, then do not miss this rock show on Friday night.

Moaning Lisa

Moaning Lisa is the product of four Canberra-based music grads who find purpose in making loud noises together. Their music operates on the edge of the grunge genre: somewhere between composed restraint and fuzzed-out, life-affirming alternative rock. Moaning Lisa create an atmosphere entirely of their own, in their raucous live shows that see them consistently pack out venues across Australia’s East Coast. Watch them do Saturday night at BBF proud.

With an impressive career spanning over a decade, 2018 saw Sampology return with a stunning follow up to his internationally praised 2016 EP Natural Selections. Launching his own Middle Name Records imprint, Sampology released the six-track Mt Glorious EP in August 2018. Sampology will be in full party mode when he brings his world renowned DJ set to Saturday night at BBF. Get ready to move your feet.
